The Strategic Castle Overlooking Two Ravines

The Castle of Castro in Alfondeguilla, Castellón, Spain, is a historic hilltop fortress of Arab origin. Built just before the Christian era, it was strategically located between two deep ravines in the Sierra de Espadán natural park, standing 789 meters above sea level. The castle's eastern part had three defensive systems: a steep cut, a compact brick wall, and a large wall of 65 meters in length. The castle occupies an area of about 2000 square meters, with two spaces: the albacar, a fortified area where the population sought refuge in case of danger, and the celoquia, which housed castle-specific dependencies like rooms, storerooms, and a well. Unfortunately, the castle's principal tower, the Torre del Homenaje, was destroyed in July 1938 by Francoist aviation during the Spanish Civil War.
