The Paukščių hillfort on the shore of Lake Surmiaus

Archaeological evidence suggests that the Steponiškės hillfort may have served as a home for the Surmino tribe.

Paukščių piliakalnis, also known as Dukurnonių piliakalnis or Steponiškių piliakalnis, is located in the Prienai district. It sits in the southeastern part of the village of Dukurnoni, on the southwestern shore of Lake Surmiaus, or Vilkai, about 0.4 km north of the crossroads of the Jieznas–Kalviai road and the road to Sundakus.

The hillfort features slopes that descend into the Surmiaus coast, with heights ranging from 10 to 14 meters. It is a well-fortified site typical of miniature hillforts, featuring a nearly circular clearing about 8 meters in diameter with a distinct cultural layer. Archaeological findings from this site are preserved in the Lithuanian National Museum.

Archaeological research was conducted in 1953, 1971, and 1988. It is believed that the hillfort was once the home of the Surmino tribe.
