Noreikiškių II Hillfort Discovered in Western Lithuania

In western Lithuania, hidden in plain sight on the banks of the Alšios river, lies Noreikiškių II hillfort. One of the largest in the country, it is located near Noreikiškių I hillfort, with a 40-meter-long and 2-meter-wide trench on its west side. The central part of the hillfort slopes towards the west and has a 2-meter platform above the ground, 12 meters wide. The hillfort's diameter is approximately 52x32 meters, with a mound located 30 meters from the platform on the Alšios slėnyje.

The Noreikiškių II hillfort was examined by the Institute of History in 1971 and was protected by the Lithuanian Republic’s Government decision on cultural heritage protection in 1998. Its site area covers 6700 square meters and is mentioned in the Lithuanian Cultural Heritage List, 1973, and the Lithuanian Cultural and Historical Heritage List, 1993. Bronius Dakanis, Algimantas Merkevičius, and Gintautas Zabiela have also referenced the hillfort in their works.
