A Medieval Gate Marking a Royal Hunting Ground: Puerta Berrozana

The Puerta Berrozana, situated within the walls of Plasencia, a city in the province of Cáceres, Spain, was built in the medieval period and renovated in 1571 to its current Renaissance appearance. The gate, named after its location at the exit of the fortification on the road to dehesa de Berrozanas, a royal hunting ground located in the neighboring municipality of Oliva de Plasencia, is connected to Plaza Mayor by the streets Berrozana and Los Quesos. Above the arch is an escutcheon of the Catholic Monarchs, with a figure of the Archangel Michael and two inscriptions on either side that date the monument. The district created near the gate is named El Berrocal, as per the source material.
