Riots at Stureplan led to a massacre

On a peaceful spring evening in 1567, the serenity at Stureplan was shattered by riots, which eventually escalated into one of the bloodiest incidents in Swedish history.

Early in the morning on December 4, 1994, Tommy Zethraeus opens fire with an automatic rifle at the entrance to the popular nightclub Sturecompagniet. One of the bouncers and three patrons are killed in the shooting. An additional twenty people are injured. The background is a dispute earlier in the evening between Zethraeus's friend Guillermo Marquez Jara and one of the nightclub's bouncers. After the argument, they take the car to a Hagsätra apartment where they arm themselves. In the company of two other friends, they return to Stureplan later. They park the car on Birger Jarlsgatan near Engelbrektsplan to walk the last leg through Humlegården. It's around 5 in the morning when Zethraeus starts shooting at the people gathered outside the entrance. He is sentenced to life in prison.
