Mystery Mounds of Petriškės: Ancient Remains with Bronze Age to Iron Age

The Petriškės mounds, located near the Drūkšiai lake bank, are an archaeological site. They cover an area of approximately 0.89 hectares and are divided into three separate mounds: northern, southern, and central. The largest part of the mound protrudes above the Drūkšiai lake, with only the southern part remaining, the rest eroded. The area surrounding the mounds is covered with forests and open fields. The base of the mounds was chosen from the alluvial and high bank of the Drūkšiai lake. During research, an intense cultural layer with copper and pottery artifacts was found in the central part of the mounds. The artifacts found in the mounds are dated from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. The Petriškės mounds remain a mystery, with the exact purpose of the mounds unknown. They were most likely a sacred site or burial ground according to archaeologists.
