Nestled between the lakes of Kryžinio and Kukninio, the mound of Junkūnų piliakalnis is located in the Rokiškis district. The north-eastern and south-western slopes are steep, reaching about 12 meters in height, while the south-eastern slope is low, at 4.5 meters high. The summit consists of an oval plateau measuring 70 by 40 meters, which contains a distinct cultural layer.
At the north-western end of the plateau, three ramps are separated by trenches 2.5 meters deep. The first ramp is about 35 meters long and 0.5 meters high. The second is 80 meters long and 2 meters high. The third, which is the outermost ramp, is 60 meters long and 1.7 meters high. On the south-western slope, two terraces are arranged: the first is 5 meters wide and 3 meters lower than the edge of the plateau, while the second is 2 meters wide and 5 meters lower.
Archaeological research on the site began in 1933 when it was described by Petras Tarasenka. Exploratory archaeological research was conducted in 1949 and 1972, with further research in 1977 and 1985. The site was declared a cultural monument by a Government of the Republic of Lithuania resolution in 1998. The total area of the monument territory is 26,000 m².
