Ancient relics hidden under modern farms in Lithuania

The Lithuanian countryside is pleasant, but the most interesting mounds in Zaras Parish are one of the largest archaeological sites in the country, Maniuliškių piliakalnis, which is located 0.5 km southwest of Maniuliškių village. The height of the mounds reaches up to 14 meters, and the site spans 50 x 29 meters. Except for the occasional house or farm, the area around the mounds is a quiet expanse of fields and woods. Archaeological findings suggest a settlement dating back to the 1st millennium BC to the 2nd century AD. The site was excavated by the Lithuanian Institute of History in 1949 and 1972, and the archaeological findings are currently stored in the Vytautas the Great Museum of the History of Lithuania. The cultural monument and its territory are protected by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania since 1998.
