Discover Guogai Hillfort: Medieval Stronghold Guarding Kaunas

Guogai Hillfort, also known as Piliuonos Piliakalnis, is an ancient hill fort located in the territory of Kaunas Regional Council, Guogau village, approximately 2 km from Piliuona, on the right bank of Nemunas river, near Kauno marias (usually in their vicinity, between Strėvas ziočių and Darsūniškio). The hill, with an estimated height of 8-10 meters, is a testament to Lithuania's medieval roots. Archaeological research suggests that the hill fort was built to protect the city of Kaunas from invaders, with its walls erected four times, potentially in the 13th to 14th century.

In the hill, there are remains of a fireplace, bricks, grindstones, ceramics, pottery shards, stone blocks, prayer stones, and molten iron. The lower cultural layer of the settlement, dating back to the 13th to 14th century, houses a 4.0 x 6.5 m stone grinding surface, believed to be a remnant of the foundation wall.
