The secret hillfort on the Nemunas high terrace

Constructed during the 1st to 2nd centuries AD, the Varkališkės I hillfort is located on the high terrace of the Nemunas river banks in Lithuania. Surrounded by a ditch on all four sides, it stands 2 meters tall, with 4-6 meter wide terraces underneath. There are stairs or slopes 8 meters below the terraces. The southern ditch is 20 meters long, the eastern one is 18 meters long, and the northern one is 22 meters long. Beneath the hillfort, a 4-5 meter wide platform 0.5 meters high supports 6-7 meter wide platforms. The hillfort was first excavated by the Institute of History in 1971, and the Lithuanian Culture Ministry declared the site a preserved cultural monument on April 29, 2005. The hillfort is also associated with a 17 by 9 meter oval platform 3 meters high, located to the west of the hillfort.
