Burčiakai Hillfort: A Glimpse into Lithuania's Distant Past

Set on the banks of Kruonio, within Kaišiadorių rajono savivaldybės territory, the Burčiakai hillfort dates back to the 1st millennium, as determined by surveys conducted by the Institute of History in 1971. Encompassing an area of roughly 300x100 meters, the hillfort is characterized by several small enclosures and trenches, arranged in a rectangular layout. The main fort measures 60x27 meters and includes a central opening, naturally formed by a large stone, approximately 11.5 meters wide. Remnants of walls and trenches remain, suggesting medieval construction. Historical records indicate that the hillfort may have been a transitory settlement, subject to conflict and migration.
