Costa del Golfo Ártabro Batteries

Costa del Golfo Ártabro Batteries are scattered along the bay of the same name, and were a key part of the vast plans for the defense of Ferrol's naval and military shipyards. They were constructed to serve as a deterrent for warships, protecting the Arsenal of Ferrol, a strategically critical site. The project was initiated by dictator Primo de Rivera in 1926 as part of the maritime tradition of Ferrol as a base for the northern Spanish Navy. In 1926, the Spanish government bought 17 naval cannons of 38.1 cm (Coast) from the British Vickers Armstrong. Each of these cannons was mounted in pairs. Of the four batteries that made up the Coastal Defence of Costa del Golfo Ártabro, three have been disarmed – San Pedro remains, though it is out of service.
