Monument to Curros Enríquez

In a seaside garden in the heart of A Coruña, Spain, you'll find a monument that is unlike any other. Carved from large stone blocks, it was originally a fence that the gardener used to keep their livestock in. But today, it serves as a tribute to a local writer named Manuel Curros Enríquez. Known for his novels, short stories, poetry, and plays, Curros Enríquez is considered one of the most important Spanish writers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Born in 1873 in Padrón, a small town on the banks of the Miño river, he moved to A Coruña to continue his studies when he was 16 years old. It was here that he began to write and publish his works. But it was his renowned novel 'Don Rafael' that brought him international recognition. This monument, known as Monumento a Curros Enríquez, was built in [1934] as a tribute to him and stands as a testament to his contributions to Spanish literature. The monument is formed by large blocks of stone that resemble dolmens or Celtic altars.
