In April and May 2026, an archaeological survey was conducted at Castro de Hortas, located on the southern tip of Isla del Medio in the Cíes Islands. This site, one of the best-known Iron Age sites in the region, is situated on steep terrain which would have allowed complete control of maritime routes in the area. GEAAT archaeologists discovered the presence of a shell midden that almost reached three meters deep, indicating prolonged and systematic use of that space for the disposal of organic waste. Several fauna samples were recovered from this survey, and ceramics were collected in this context. These artifacts will be analyzed in the GEAAT laboratory located on the Ourense campus.
