El Castillico: A Strategic Hill Fortress Preserving Medieval History

Castillo de Salvatierra, locally known as El Castillico, is a strategic hill fortress situated in Villena, Alicante, Spain. Constructed during the Islamic Caliphate period, it played a significant role throughout the Middle Ages, though sources do not definitively confirm its role during the Reconquista. Nonetheless, the fortress acted as a pivotal outpost, overseeing the Vinalopó region. It remained an active military stronghold until the 14th century, with its importance gradually decreasing in favor of Castillo de la Atalaya. Although privately owned and not open to the public, measures are taken to conserve it due to its designation as a protected cultural monument.
