Bòbila del Sugranyes: Firing the Revolution

The Bòbila del Sugranyes, a local cultural heritage protected building in Reus, Spain, is a unique addition to Catalonia's Inventory of Architectural Heritage and Map of Industrial Heritage. Built with mud and bricks, it features a circular plan, with a diameter of around twenty-three meters. The central chimney, standing nineteen meters tall, protrudes from the semi-buried lower area of the kiln. Radial feeding holes encircle the chimney. Josep Sugranyes, the owner and operator of the kiln, was also a political activist who made headlines in August 1939 when a group of PSUC militants, including himself, gathered at the location to form a new local committee, headed by Ángel Olaya. Olaya was imprisoned at the Model Prison in Barcelona and sentenced to death.
