The Archaeological Wonders of Dapšių Kaimas: Discover the Alkos Hill Fort

The Alkos Hill Fort, nestled in the Dapšių Kaimas area, is a fascinating archaeological site covering 42 by 11 meters on its surface. Its distinctive triangular shape, oriented towards the southwest, is just one of its many intriguing features. The Alkos Hill Fort was probably reconstructed multiple times, with the last reconstruction taking place in the 19th or 20th century by pioneer settlers. Excavations conducted by the Lithuanian Institute of History in 1974 uncovered that the fort was built over a period of up to 1,000 years, from the 1st millennium BCE to the 13th century.

The site boasts a 1-meter-high and 3-meter-wide wall, and artifacts such as an iron fence, a whetstone, flint stones, pottery, and animal bones have been found within its walls. The Alkos Hill Fort is preserved by the Lithuanian National Museum and is listed in the Lithuania SSR Archaeological Atlas (1975), Lithuania SSR Cultural Heritage Catalogue (1973), and Lithuanian Cultural Heritage Encyclopedia (1998).
