Griežė's Earthen Hillfort: A 1300-Year-Old Warrior's Fortress

Griežė's hillfort, situated in the Mažeikiai region of Lithuania, is a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of an ancient civilization. For more than 1300 years, it served as a strategic stronghold, its towering defenses protecting against invaders. The hillfort, surrounded by burial mounds and ancient artifacts, offers a glimpse into the past. It was visited during the Battle of Rinberga, which took place in 1264, although it was not built in that year. The hillfort, enclosed by a ditch and with a 13-meter-deep trench, measured about 50 by 40 meters and was roughly 3 meters higher than the surrounding terrain. Dating back to the 1st century AD – 13th century AD, the hillfort was constructed with earthen walls and wooden fortifications. The central part of the hillfort was occupied by a karst area, while the eastern part faced the Venta river.
