The Self-Commemorating Stone: U 1011

The self-commemorating rune stone U 1011, located in Universitetsparken next to Uppsala University, is over 1000 years old. It is part of the famous Jarlabanke Runestones and stands in the park close to the main university building. It was part of the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867. After having lain there for several decades in Le Havre, it was returned to Uppsala. The runestone, consisting of a runic inscription on two sides, is in the Urnes style. It is similar to other runestones that use the term stýrimanns or stýrimaðr, such as Sö 161, U 1016, and U 803. The Norse word sál for soul in the prayer was imported from English and was first recorded as being used during the tenth century.
