Serbia: Fortresses and castles, crossroads of empires and religions
Para explorar
In the territory of modern Serbia lies the ruins of fortresses built in strategically important places - next to rivers, trade routes and the borders of past empires. Erected to protect cities, estates or monasteries, they played an important role in the military strategies of medieval rulers. Some castles had an exclusively defensive role: here you can observe ancient military camps, armories and barracks. Within others grew real cities: houses, schools and trading stalls, as well as churches and mosques. The ruins of some still exist. One of the oldest fortresses in Serbia is Staro-Ras, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with the nearby monasteries of Sopoćani and Đurdjevi Stupovi, as well as the church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul (Petra Church). Serbian fortresses allow one to come close to the turbulent history of these lands and transport visitors to the Middle Ages - an era when powerful rulers, brave knights, and great battles inhabited these regions.
