Nestled deep in the pine forests of the Nemunas River, we find the Žarijos I hillfort, located in Bagrėnas, Prienų region, Ašmintos district. This archaeological site, declared a protected cultural monument of Lithuania on May 19, 1998, was built over a thousand years ago and has seen action in several legendary battles.
The hillfort covers a 40x26 meter area and is up to 5 meters deep. The surrounding moat, a 10-meter-deep trench 24 meters wide and up to 32 meters wide, with a 4-meter-wide bridge over the top, now serves to define the hillfort's boundaries.
Excavations in 1953 and 1971 by the History Institute discovered a habitation of 0.2 hectares, containing wooden and earthen structures, pottery, and remains of wooden dwellings. Presently, the site is preserved by the Lithuanian National Museum.
