Mačiūnai Hillfort: A Ghostly Enigma in Prienai, Lithuania

Mačiūnai Hillfort, standing in Prienai, Radvilishkis district, Kaunas county, is a four-sided archaeological site and an attraction, rooted in the 1st to 2nd Century AD. Protected since 2005 by the Lithuanian Culture Ministry, the hillfort boasts a four-sided enclosure, oriented towards the northeast-southwest. The enclosure features a moat on the northwest side and another towards the southeast. A 1.5 m high staircase offers access to the 8 m wide and 6 m high terrace.

The terrace was designed primarily for defense, while the northwest trench was used for communication. Archaeological studies from 1953 reveal that the hillfort was fortified during the 1st to 2nd Century AD. Known previously as Nuotakos kalnas or Nuotakos kalnus, Mačiūnų piliakalnis is found in Morkūnupio kairiajame krante. It is shrouded in legends, such as those of a trapped nuotaka (specter or ghost) attempting to escape by climbing up and another tale of seven twins being buried there. The hillfort is listed in the Register of Cultural Monuments of Lithuania.
