Vainatrakis: A Hidden Protestant Church under a 2nd Millennium Christian Village

Vainatrakis, a hillfort hidden under an old Christian village, stands 28 meters tall and stretches 110 meters in diameter. Excavations by the History Institute in the early 21st century revealed a church beneath the hillfort's outer walls. This church, dating back to the 2nd Millennium, was originally a Protestant fortress, built for defense against pagan attacks. Although damaged by a fire in the 19th century, the walls and foundations of the church remain. Today, only the outer walls of the hillfort are visible, with the buried church lying hidden beneath the surface.
