In the heart of the North Saqqara plateau, nestled between the intricate labyrinth of Sekhemket and Djoser, lies a dreamy sanctuary. Buried beneath the sands since time immemorial, this unassuming refuge is more than just a resting place. Veiled in the ancient Egyptian enchantment of eternal sleep, it safeguards its secrets close, creating an air of mystery that has enshrouded it since the beginning of history. This hidden relic was constructed during the 24th century BC under the rule of Unas, the ninth and final king of the Fifth Dynasty.
Its discovery came to light in the year 1881, when Gaston Maspero unearthed the Pyramid Texts within. These magical spells marked their first appearance and were passed down through successive rulers until the end of the Old Kingdom. The Whispering Shrine of Unas rests on the Saqqara plateau, its approach a long, winding path meandering through reused tombs from the Second Dynasty. It was later used for numerous burials of Fifth Dynasty officials, as well as private individuals from the Eighteenth and Twentieth Dynasties, and a collection of Late Period monuments known as the 'Persian tombs'.
