The Upplands Runic Inscription 931: A Missing Section

This runestone, known as Upplands Runic Inscription 931 (U 931), was originally discovered in the ground of Uppsala Cathedral in 1866. Today, it stands outside the cathedral along with six other runestones. The stones were painted red and were moved to their current location east of the Domkyrka in June 1976, after three stones were found under the cathedral’s pelars during the restorations in 1975. Before 1976, U 931 was in English Park from 1866, in Botanical Gardens from 1898, and north of the cathedral from 1921.

The original location of U 931 is unknown. The stone is 1.22 meters high, 1.38 meters wide, and 0.38 meters thick. The height of the runes is 5-6 centimeters. The left part of the stone, where the inscription is, is missing. The inscription on the stone, which is still present, starts at the top left and goes down towards the right. The inscription in the runes translates to 'Jovurfast let resuce the stone in memory of his father Jovurfast'.
