Inscription from the past: The serpent and its fellow beasts

Discovered in 1866 within the foundation of Uppsala Cathedral, this 1.58-meter-tall granite monument carries the enigmatic runic text of an inscription from nearly a millennium ago. The runes depict a serpent intertwined with other beasts, their almond eyes and spiraling forms etched into the stone. Although somewhat damaged, the runes and the design they create have survived through the passage of time, holding a secret from an era lost to history before the cathedral was built.
