The stairway to heaven and the vineyard of the monks

Cartoixa d'Escaladei, or Chapterhouse of Scala Dei, was a monastery of the Carthusian order in the southern Catalonia. Founded in 1194, it was established to repopulate the Catalunya Nova territory. According to legends, the Carthusian monks were told about a stairway to heaven by a shepherd. This slope to the divine was not directly stated in historic accounts, yet it adds to the charm of the monastic community's secluded valley. The monastery started the planting of vines in the region that later became known as Priorat due to the vineyards of the monks.
