The Hidden Treasures of 3rd Century BC Castellet de Banyoles

The Castellet de Banyoles, situated in Tivissa, Catalonia, Spain, occupies an area of 4-5 hectares. Known for its pentagonal towers, this site is unique among the protohistoric fortifications of the Iberian Peninsula. In 1927, a treasure composed of silver and gold decorated vessels, including the 1912 hoard of jewelry and coins, the 1925 bronze statuette of two bulls, and the 1927 Treasure III, was found at the site. Formal excavations commenced later, with significant discoveries and regulated archaeological interventions facilitated by the site’s official recognition as a cultural heritage asset in 1978. The site is also known for its medieval castle, built in the 12th century.
