Antonio Vela Mendicute, a Spanish tenor, was born on November 6, 1904, in Escobedo de Camargo, Spain. At the age of 16, he emigrated to Argentina and began his musical education, debuting in the Teatro Mayo of Buenos Aires with the opera Marina. He was the tenor titular of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires for nine years. His performances in the Teatro San Carlos in Naples were noteworthy, and he formed a partnership with famous divas such as Renata Tebaldi and Maria Callas.
