Duke Krzysztof's battlement fortress: 6 centuries of struggle in Biržai

Biržai Castle, located in Biržai, Lithuania, is a testament to six centuries of conflict. Commissioned by Duke Krzysztof 'Piorun' Radziwiłł in the 16th century, this Italian-style bastion fortress was one of the first in North-Eastern Europe and was strategically located to defend the Aukštaitija region and Panevėžys County. The castle's initial purpose was to serve as a crucial Lithuanian stronghold during the continuous wars with Sweden, largely due to Sigismund III Vasa, Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland, and his descendants laying claim to the Swedish throne. Despite centuries of struggle, the castle remains standing. Today, it houses a museum, library, and a restaurant, serving as a lively memorial of this long-standing conflict.
