A forest hillfort abandoned in the 19th century

Buried in the pines and the fog of time, Žiobų piliakalnis, or the Biržų County Hillfort, is a secret archaeological site in the Lower Nemunas region of Lithuania. Dated to the 1st millennium, it was once a formidable fortification, its existence hidden by the mighty pines that line the riverbank. The site covers an area of 57x40 meters and stands up to 1.3 meters high. When excavated in 1939 and 1969, pottery and a cultural layer were found, offering a glimpse of life in ancient Lithuania. However, the site has suffered over the years, abandoned in the 19th century and partially destroyed. today, it stands as a fragment of the past, a testament to the rich history that lies buried in the Lithuanian landscape.
