Durham Castle's Ancient Norman Chapel: A Burial Site for Bishops

Durham Castle's northern range houses an ancient Norman chapel, estimated to have been built around 1080. This chapel, initially constructed against the inner bailey wall, served as a residence for the bishops. Bishop Walcher, the first bishop of Durham, was buried in the chapel. Today, the chapel is preserved and open for tours within Durham Castle, owned by the University of Durham. The castle and its chapel are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are Grade I listed by English Heritage, emphasizing its historical significance.
