Nine Standards Rigg, a summit on Hartley Fell in the Pennine Hills, lies near the border between Cumbria and North Yorkshire, close to Kirkby Stephen. It's a few miles south-east of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The name 'Nine Standards' comes from an ancient group of stone cairns nearby. Their original purpose is uncertain, but it is believed they marked the boundary between Westmorland and Swaledale, standing at the watershed between the Eden and the Whitsundale Beck. These mysterious pillars offer a unique view of the surrounding landscape, revealing Wild Boar Fell and the Howgills to the west, Cross Fell and Great Dun Fell to the north-west, and Great Shunner Fell and Rogan’s Seat to the south-east.
