The Navarra Songbird: Raimundo Lanas Muru

Raimundo Lanas Muru was born on January 23, 1908 in Murillo el Fruto, Navarra, Spain. He was a shepherd and blacksmith who began singing at a young age in his native town. He moved to Pamplona and joined 'Los Amigos del Arte' and 'Orfeón Pamplonés', and his director, Remigio Múgica, encouraged him. In Pamplona, he met Miguel Cenoz, a guitarist from Ostiz, who became his lifelong friend and accompanist. It was Miguel who invited him to Barcelona, where he recorded his first jotas. Raimundo achieved great success in Cuba, Mexico, and New York. Luis Gil Gómez described his voice as 'timbrada y fuerte' (rich and powerful), serving 'without baroque stylistic ornaments' to the 'lyrics of popular singers'. He died on December 31, 1939 in Fuendejalón, Zaragoza, Spain, at the age of 31. Today, there is a bust of Raimundo Lanas Muru in his memory.
