The Mosaic that Marks Plaça Catalunya's National Day Commemoration

The plaza of Plaça Catalunya is a public square located in the municipality of Sant Boi de Llobregat in the region of Baix Llobregat. The pavement of the square includes a mosaic by Antoni Tàpies, an artist whose works are a part of the Inventari del Patrimoni Arquitectònic de Catalunya. The mosaic was created in 1983, in memory of the first authorized celebration of Catalonia's National Day after the death of Franco, which took place in Plaça Catalunya in 1976.

J. Gardy Artigas collaborated with Tàpies on the creation of the mosaic. The mosaic consists of irregularly shaped ceramic tiles. The majority of the ceramic tiles are rectangular. The colors of the mosaic move between brown and beige. The profile of the mosaic by Tàpies is irregular. The mosaic includes the gestural traces characteristic of Tàpies's work. The mosaic also includes the inscription 'Setembre 1976'. Another sculpture dedicated to Oriol Martorell can be found at Plaça Catalunya. The sculpture dedicated to Oriol Martorell was created by Artur Aldomà Puig in 1998.
