Situated in the heart of Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa, the 1820 Settlers National Monument stands as a reminder of the contributions made to South African society by the British 1820 Settlers. The building was designed by John Sturrock, who was inspired by the work of Louis Kahn, and was constructed by Murray and Stewart (EP) Pty Ltd.
The monument commemorates the Anglo-South Africans as much as the settlers themselves, and serves as a tribute to the English language. Since its opening on 13 July 1974, the monument has been the anchor and largest venue for the National Arts Festival. The main theatre within the monument complex is named after Guy Butler.
While the monument was devastated by a fire in 1994, it was rebuilt and officially re-dedicated by Nelson Mandela in May 1996.
