A single name is carved into the sandstone of Meiringspoort. This site serves as a memorial to the stories told by the satirist C.J. Lagenhoven in his works Sonde met die bure (1921) and Herrie op die ou tremspoor (1925).
Lagenhoven's stories featured characters including Kerneels, Vroutjie, Engela, and a fictional circus elephant named Herrie. The narratives also involved a tram and the Lagenhoven family's vacation house.
In 1929, Lagenhoven carved the name HERRIE into the sandstone approximately 15 km from the southern entrance to the gorge. The site is now a declared cultural monument.
The inscription remains as a permanent mark in the rock, commemorating the literary world of Lagenhoven's humor and his fictional companions.
