Šereika Hillfort: A 13th-century stronghold on the Nemuno Riverbank

The Šereika Hillfort is located in Pagėgiai, on the northern bank of the Nemuno River. It is reinforced with stone statues up to 10-15 meters high and an earthen fortification wall, up to 2.5 meters high. The hillfort was built by the Skalvi tribe, known as Šereika, mentioned in 1276. It once presented a formidable stronghold, protecting the tribe from enemies in the 13th century. Today, a 0.2-hectare area around the hillfort contains an ancient settlement, with pottery and vessels found. The site is protected by a decree of the Lithuanian Government – 1998-05-19; Nr: 612, and occupies an area of 21,000 m². Pagėgiai, situated in Lithuania, is a municipality that encompasses the hillfort.
