Nemunaičio piliakalnis, a hill overlooking the Nemunas River in Lithuania, harbors a mystery. In the 14th century, it was the site of Nemunaitis, Lithuania's last great castle. Built under King Jogaila, this castle was constructed to monitor the river traffic and protect nearby Alytus, a flourishing trade center. Yet, the reasons for deserting the castle remain veiled in mystery. Today, the hill attracts visitors hoping to uncover the past. The castle ruins from the 14th century still stand atop the hill, while the lower levels reveal the remains of earlier structures.
