Piliakalnis hillfort (Alytus)

The Piliakalnis hillfort is a rare relic of Lithuania’s prehistoric past. Located in the Alytaus district, it sits atop a separate hill, overlooking the surrounding terrain. The hillfort, with its three-sided triangular shape, covers an area of 0.1 hectares in the medieval period. In the medieval period, a settlement is known to have existed on the hill, where ceramic fragments were found. The archaeologists date the hillfort back to the 1st millennium BC. The Lithuanian Culture Ministry has declared Piliakalnis a cultural monument for preservation - 2005-04-29, Nr. ĮV-190. The area of the cultural monument is 6100 m², while the area of the physical protection zone is 4000 m². Visitors are welcome to explore the site, which is open for visits.
