The hillfort hidden deep in the valley

Hidden deep in the Dubysos valley, Bažavalės piliakalnis or Barsukalnis as it is called locally, is an ancient, anonymous hillfort that emerges from the trees on a hillside just south of the Dubysos river. Despite centuries of erosion, you can still make out the remains of a 2-meter-high wall that once surrounded this 10-meter-long by 11-meter-wide fort, protected by a moat. Though no one knows for sure who built it, experts estimate it dates from the 1st to 2nd centuries AD. Archeological investigations in 1985 found the remains of a 1 hectare Roman-era settlement nearby, providing clues as to why this part of the valley was once populated. Be warned, though - this site is not easy to reach as it lies on a steep hillside, and is surrounded by dense forest.
