Sėlos piliakalnis: An Iron Age Enigma in Rural Lithuania

The Iron Age hillfort Sėlos piliakalnis lies hidden at the edge of Sėlės, one of Lithuania's oldest territories. The mound, measuring 60 by 17 meters, is camouflaged within a field, its oval shape and surrounding ditch stark against the modern farmland nearby. Within the oval mound stands a 0.2-meter high porch, 9 meters wide and 2.5 meters deep, housing a 30 by 20-meter square terrace. The pillars of the porch soar at 9 meters high. The hillfort is now largely overgrown by trees. Remnants of destroyed Iron Age hillforts are found just 300 meters to the south. In 1970, the Historical Institute researched the hillfort, and it is dated to the Iron Age.
