Tucked away beneath the colossal temples and tombs of yesteryear, within the sands of Abydos, lies a treasure long forgotten - Kom El Sultan, a sanctuary enclosed by an ancient temenos wall that spans 76,800 square meters. Dedicated to the deity Osiris, Lord of the Underworld, this cherished ground has been veiled by the passage of time for centuries.
First explored during the early days of archaeology, West Mariette and Garstang delved into the northwestern corner of the temenos wall, while Petrie unearthed evidence of the Osiris temple, dating from the Early Dynastic Period to the 26th Dynasty.
Adams uncovered part of the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period town site in the southern section, while Marlar discovered the Osiris temple itself, unearthing both New Kingdom and 30th Dynasty phases of the temple.
