The contested castle of Eišiškės: an imposing 14th-century fortress in Lithuania

Situated in the Šalčininkė region of Lithuania, Eišiškių piliavietė, or Gornostajiškių piliavietė, is distinctive for its size – 84 x 112 meters, enclosed in a square form. Construction dates back to around 1300. However, it was Eišys, rather than Sudimantas, Vytautas' step-father, who presumably owned the castle during the initial part of the 14th century, as evidenced by records from later in that century.
