The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia stands 1,600 years old on the outskirts of Ravenna, a deserted landscape of vineyards and watery canals. The mausoleum, built between 425 and 450, is a testament to the ornate art of late antiquity, its stars and celestial motifs shining bright to this day. However, its patroness, Galla Placidia, never saw its completion as she passed away before its construction was finished. Daughter of Theodosius I and Galla, and raised by Serena, wife of Stilicho, Galla Placidia left a lasting impact despite her early demise. Her influences can be traced in various religious institutions, including the refurbishment of Saint Paul's outside-the-walls and the construction of a basilica dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, both in Rome.
