The 8th-century residence of Ravenna's Byzantine governor

A glimpse into the opulent home of a long-gone governor, adorned with ancient mosaics.

The 'Palazzo di Teodorico' is a remaining facade from various construction periods, originally serving as the residence of the Exarch of Ravenna, a Byzantine governor, in the 8th century. After ceasing to be a residence in the early 1900s, it underwent restoration, featuring the insertion of two columns into the street-facing windows. Now, only the facade block remains, adorned with mosaics that hint at its past grandeur. It is located along Via di Roma, near the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo.
