A Forgotten Abbey's Echo: Meira, Spain

In the heart of a small village bearing the same name, Meira Abbey stands, a silent witness to time. Founded in the 12th century as a daughter house of Clairvaugh Abbey, the monastery was likely endowed by Kings Alfonso VII, Ferdinand II, and Alfonso IX. Supported further by the Cistercian Castilian Congregation in 1515, the abbey saw the establishment of a school of higher philosophy. However, like many historical sites, its days were numbered. Suppressed in 1835 during the dissolution of the monasteries by the Mendizábal government, only the church remains. Now a parish church, it has stood as a national monument since 1931.
