The castle at Marcuello, built by King Anso V. Ramirez in 1074, still dominates the skyline of the sleepy village it has been watching over for a thousand years. It was the seat of power for several castellans during the 12th century, including Peter Sanchez and Barbatuerta and Anso Enekoitz. In 1488, the castles of Sarsamarcuello and Linás de Marcuello were joined, and in 1610, the castle at Marcuello was abandoned. Today, the castle ruins stand as a testament to a bygone era and a reminder of the power struggles that once took place in this corner of Spain.
