The Fort that Sold Time

The church of Sant Salvador de Montoliu de Segarra looks ordinary at first. A modest single nave, flat-topped chancel, and a bell tower stand on the village's main square. Records trace its lineage back to the 11th century, but what is unusual here is the silence. In need of bells, the villagers turned to an unexpected source: a local fort supplying munitions for the Peninsular War. The exact origin and reason of the bells here is unclear, but according to the story, in the dead of night, a cargo of bells was smuggled to the church, hidden beneath bundles of cloth. Today, the bells ring for mass, for the patron saints, and for the village's gatherings. The bells bear the marks of their unusual past.
