The Pseudo Door: A Muslim Legacy in Ayora's Renowned Castle

The Castle of Ayora, nestled in the Spanish town of Ayora, is a captivating monument to the region's history. Originally a Muslim building rebuilt in the 13th century by the Aragonese, it showcases remnants of its Islamic past in its architecture. Surrounded by defensive walls and towers, the castle, residences, forts, and gardens all come together in the ruins. This castle, built using masonry and ashlar, has remnants of earlier Muslim structures like rammed earth.

One of the castle's most intriguing features is the four-sided keep, which bore witness to extensive renovations in the 16th century. Among these renovations was the construction of the so-called Puerta Falsa, or Fake Door, commissioned by the Marchioness of Cenete, featuring a coat of arms marking her power and influence. Since 2006, the Castle of Ayora has been declared Bien de Interés Cultural (property of cultural interest) with reference RI-51-0010507.
